After working four years in Southeast Asia and the Far East, Jonathan Chu returned to his hometown of Los Angeles looking for the authentic tastes of Asia he enjoyed throughout his travels. Chu envisioned a unique restaurant that would provide an eclectic selection of his favorite Pan-Asian foods at an affordable price that would woo both fans of Asian cuisine and the uninitiated alike.

With the help of close friends, family, investors and the culinary guidance from Executive Chef Hisashi Yoshiara, Jonathan and his team set out to create a vision for Buddha's Belly and opened the first location in 2002.

With more than forty years restaurant experience between them, Buddha's Belly has been a success since its opening. Inside the Feng Shui-designed restaurant, guests can enjoy a "culinary trip across Asia", a full take-out menu, and off and on-premise catering.

Buddha's Belly takes great pride in giving back to the community (see community involvement for more information) and serving as a good corporate citizen to help reduce the strain on the environment. Currently Buddha's Belly recycles all plastics, glass, raw food, paper and cardboard waste. Energy-saving switches have been installed in the restrooms, storage rooms and office, turning on only when people occupy those rooms. The restaurant supports local farmers and producers, using organic produce when possible. Additionally, Buddha's Belly provides used cooking oil for bio-diesel vehicles and inquires which to-go utensils are needed, if necessary. Buddha's Belly is always looking for more ways to be enlightened and welcomes green recommendations.

Jonathan and Hisashi work daily to provide a fulfilling work environment for our staff. Many of our co-workers have been with the company since the restaurant's opening day.
